Hanging planters are a decorative element that will beautifully embellish any home setting. House plants also help to purify your indoor air, increase your connection with nature, and enhance your wellbeing.
Hanging planters are so versatile that they can be used to bring nature into almost any room. Try herb pots in the kitchen, suspended feature plant lights in the living room, trailing plants in the bedroom and even (or especially!) hanging planters brightening a corner of the bathroom! Every room can benefit from hanging planters if you ask me!
There are many eco-friendly hanging planters crafted from materials such as metal, ceramic, wood, jute, recycled glass and natural woven textiles. In order to have minimal impact on the environment, avoid plastic and explore second-hand options before buying new.
Whether you lean towards sleek and modern, shiny metallic, textured and rustic, or woven and natural – there is a hanging planter for everyone!
Here are some of my favourites.
1. Stylish Black Metal Hangers
This set of two contemporary hanging metal planters allow you to add a botanical accent at various heights. They are crafted from coated iron, and their slender black frames give an element of sophistication.
PRO-DESIGNER STYLING TIP:
These would go particularly well in a house with other black accents such as black table frames, chair legs, furniture detailing, or black metal light fittings.
2. Hand-Painted Ceramic Hanging Planter
These Matamba Ceramic Planters are shaped and painted by hand in Vietnam by skilled artisans. They use a wealth of techniques that are thousands of years old. This range is eco-friendly, ethically sourced and has simplistic style to beat the band.
PRO-DESIGNER STYLING TIP:
Due to the hard-wearing nature of ceramic, you can hang these planters indoors or outdoors. They would be a great way of bringing a dash of greenery into a bathroom. Hang them as a group of three at varying heights to create a unique and interesting focal point.
3. Basket-Style Woven Planters
I love the textured look of basket-style planters created from natural materials such as seagrass, jute or cotton rope. The eco-friendly basket-style planters below are woven from natural cotton.
PRO-DESIGNER STYLING TIP:
Pair with rattan furniture, textured soft furnishings and light fittings in natural materials (like this braided bamboo shade) for that added natural aesthetic with low environmental impact.
4. Add a Little Luxe with Gold
This hanging planter pot has a curved neck and statement gold finish. The piece is made from sturdy metal and is suspended from a hook with beautiful chain detailing.
PRO-DESIGNER STYLING TIP:
Don’t over-do it on the gold! Have a mix of some simpler styles so that the luxe gold ones really stand out and shine as a decadent feature. Use gold or brass accents in other detailing around your home – light fittings and handles for example. This will tie your design scheme together for a high-end, polished look.
5. Triple your Style with a Three-Tier Planter
Try a tiered hanging planter made from the simplest of materials – white earthenware and natural rope.
PRO-DESIGNER STYLING TIP:
Put different plant species in each of the pots to add to the visual appeal. Include a mix of both upright plants and trailing plants to really mix it up.
8. Feature Pendant Lamp Planter
A light and a hanging planter all in one – what’s not to love! I adore the black and polished copper detailing of this plant lamp fitting.
Pro-designer Styling Tip:
I think these planters would be stunning as a feature in a kitchen. Hang several of them over an island – And tie the whole scheme together with copper handles to the kitchen cabinetry for that added ‘Wow’!.
These fittings are a unique way to provide soft ‘mood lighting’ to your kitchen. Mood lighting creates a warming ambience for the evening time rather than having overly-bright lighting from one end of the day to the other (one of my bug-bearers). Do remember to pair them with ‘task lighting’ though – I will not be held responsible for any fingers being chopped off during food prep!
6. Rustic Planters – Buy New, Second Hand or Create your Own!
Buying second hand or creating your own planters are the best ways to minimise your environmental impact. Or there are loads of beautiful, rustic and eco-friendly options to choose from – Here are a couple of my favourites.
PRO-DESIGNER STYLING TIP:
These rustic-looking planters are the perfect accessory if you are going for a slightly industrial style in your home.
The conical planters are ethically made from zinc in an elegant tapered shape with an aged rust finish. Bring nature inside and create a striking textured display.
Or to add to their rustic charm, hang them in your garden – Their aged rust finish will weather and enhance beautifully with age.
7. Hand-Crafted Cotton Macramé and Recycled Glass Bowl
Macramé is an age-old art which consists of hand-knotting textiles into magnificent patterns. These Basua Macramé Planters are hand-made, fair-trade certified and ethically sourced. The round glass vase is made from recycled glass with a textured hammered finish, while the macramé is woven from natural cotton.
PRO-DESIGNER STYLING TIP:
Ideal for displaying indoor plants and succulents, this hanging planter would be an eye-catching addition to any room. I recommend placing your plant pot inside the glass bowl and surround it with sand so that it is more visually appealing. Succulents might work best in these as they require much less watering and are used to sandy environments!
9. Hanging Plant Shelves
Hanging shelves are an attractive option for hosting groups of potted herbs or trailing plants. You could create these shelves yourself from a bit of wood and rope. Or for the non-DIY fans, there are some fantastic, eco-friendly options that you can get without so much as looking at a saw or sander.
This shelf from Ethical Superstore features three recesses to hold plant pots securely in place. The shelf is made from 100% pinewood with natural jute rope at either end. This entire unit is made from natural materials, and the wood is 100% FSC Certified – so we know it comes from responsible forestry.
Or this Paulownia Wood Shelf option in a white finish hung from a natural jute rope.
PRO-DESIGNER STYLING TIP:
Place a selection of herbs or trailing plants in rough clay pots on the shelves for that extra rustic and natural feel.
10. Window Rod Planting Pots
Create your very own herb garden or planting display in the window of your kitchen, without taking up any windowsill space! The simple black and white finishes will work with almost any interior design scheme.
PRO-DESIGNER STYLING TIP:
For wider windows, butt additional rods alongside each other to make the display longer. Having the rod length slightly wider than the window will look much more sophisticated than having the rods too short.
These window rod planters could also be a great way of providing some additional privacy if required for windows looking onto busy streets. Or if you have a beautiful view that you don’t wish to block, simply adjust the ropes and hang the pots at a higher level.
I hope that these ideas have inspired you on the many ways to elevate your home styling with hanging planters.
Choose planters that suit your personal, unique style and see how they can transform your space.
If you like a bit of ‘luxe’, go for metallic accents. If you are a fan of the natural aesthetic, try a woven basket style made from natural materials. If simplicity is what you are striving for, go for white glazed earthenware. If rustic is your thing, try aged metal or textured wood. And if you’re feeling creative, make your own!
