Since receiving this portable, designer lamp from Lights.ie a few weeks ago, it has barely left my side! It is stylish, atmospheric, and one of the most versatile decor pieces in my home.
Designed in Denmark, it makes sense that this lamp helps to create a feeling of cosy contentment, or as the Danes call it – Hygge (pronounced ‘Hoo-guh’).
What is Hygge?
Hygge is a Danish lifestyle concept of creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere and savouring the simple pleasures in life. Imagine a room that is so comfortable it feels like a warm hug – That is Hygge.
Despite living through long, dark winters, the Danes are known to be some of the happiest people in the world. They combat the darkness with candles, hot beverages, textured blankets, good company, and of course, soft, ambient lighting.
The Importance of Ambient Lighting for Hygge
Dimming your lighting in the evening is crucial for creating a cosy, relaxed, Hygge-type setting in your home. Warm, ambient lighting helps to mimic the warmth of the setting sun.
As it is lightweight and portable, this little LED lamp helps create that feeling of Hygge in any corner of your home. It is like a soft, glowing orb of light that is dimmable to three different levels.
The Impressive Versatility of the Lamp
The main reason why I chose this particular lamp was its versatility, meaning it works equally as well as a table lamp as it does hanging as a wall or ceiling lamp.
The curved handle smoothly pivots to allow you to use the lamp in various positions. And as it is conveniently rechargeable by USB, it is cable-free and not tied to one particular place in your home.
There was one particularly tricky area in my home – the kitchen-dining area – where we were in dire need of some atmospheric lighting. The room had only one lighting source – very bright overhead spotlights (non-dimmable!) which were really not conducive to a relaxed dinner setting!
A wall lamp over the dining table would have been the perfect solution, but ripping open a freshly-painted wall to allow for the cabling was not very appealing.
This new lamp was the perfect solution!
I had three hooks installed for hanging wall-planters, and in the evening time, I swap out the central planter for the lamp. It absolutely transforms the feeling of the space, and I am beyond delighted to have achieved it in such a non-invasive way.
After dinner, I usually take the lamp over to the lounge area and dim it to its lowest setting for a soft ambience.
During the day, the lamp lives on a shelving unit in our living area. Sometimes, if it is a dull day, I use it as a table lamp in my home office area (also known as the kitchen!) to add a gentle glow to my workspace. It has even made it to my bedside table on several occasions!
The simple, sculptural shape of the handle and opal diffuser means that it looks just as beautiful sitting on a shelf when it is turned off, as it does when it is being put to use as a lamp.
When the weather warms up, the lamp will also be accompanying me to our little outdoor garden area!
Chic Finish Options
This beautiful lamp comes in a range of finishes: black, white, olive, dark red and brass.
For my home – the Rustic Townhouse – I chose the black finish to tie in with other black details in the design scheme. It really is striking, and I adore the look!
The other colour options look gorgeous too.
If your preference is for a lighter, more neutral aesthetic, then the white one might be for you. If you are a little more adventurous with colour, how about trying out the olive or dark red?
Or if you are working with gold tones in your home, the brass finish would look luxuriously stunning!
My advice – Embrace the Hygge philosophy, dim your designer lamp and get cosy. You might just find yourself among the world’s happiest people!
